Tahitian Pearl Necklace
 
A stunning example of the naturally coloured pearls, grey to black in colour, which grow in the Tahitian and Cook Islands. The oysters here have evolved to add manganese to the calcium carbonate, of which all pearls are made. The abundance of manganese in the region also explains why the beaches have black sands.
