Sometimes stones are laser sawn. The intense bluish white light is the laser which runs back and forth vaporizing away about a 3° narrow wedge of diamond. Next is a wheel with 4 craftsmen working away while an operator is checking the finish on a Lexus auto polishing machine. There are 4 heads working here on the one wheel. Note the operator wears a mask and there is a vacuum system removing the fine dust.

We had lunch at a sea-side hotel. I never knew there were nice sandy beaches like this around Mumbai.

We paid a visit to a company called Shrenuj, who are centrally located in Mumbai near the diamond district (called ‘Opera House'). As you can see their factory is state of the art. Apoorva attended the IDCC Diamond hosted in Moscow last year, and runs a very slick manufacturing operation. We were particularly impressed with his performance charts that were on display for workers, comparing the results of their work output and quality. They had a great sawing department supervised by a wise Belgian. We made a presentation to the Shrenuj Board, but unfortunately we were short on time and had 15 minutes only to navigate the busy Bombay traffic to catch our train to Surat . We made it with a couple of minutes to spare. I caught this shot out the window looking into the sun; it shows a well filled train of commuters enjoying the cool breeze (or is it too full?). It was very hot and muggy the whole time as the Monsoon had started. We had a sleeper booth, which was not fair as I was permanently in front of computer when ever we were driving or training, preparing and honing power point presentations.
Around ½ an hour from the journeys end, the express train stopped at an unscheduled station. After ½ an hour we learned earlier that day there had been a goods train derailment the other side of Surat . The trains were banked up. Janak made a call to a client who lived near by, and we opted for the certainty of a 1 ½ hour drive on minor roads. We were joined by Siddhartha from ShairuGems and his cousin.
The young guys were sitting atop all our suitcases etc in the back of the 4WD. The driver took off like a racing car driver on pretty awful windy roads. We managed to calm him down and arrived rather late that night after an additional adventure.
