India 2005

I arrived in Bombay in July 2005, a few days before Sergey and Yuri, to do some diamond buying, including some from companies that we have established a good relationship with through Janak and the Cut conference last year. It helps if I can see an assortment of their goods in a sales environment. Sometimes I can make suggestions for improvements. In 3 days I spent ½ our house, which is rather scary. When the time came, I moved out of the Taj Hotel, to the Leela which is near the airport and the trade show.

Mr. Peter Yantzer, CEO of the American Gem Society Laboratory had previously had a senior position running the West Coast GIA lab, some time before being invited to open the AGS's lab in 1996. Peter presented AGS's newly revamped cut grading system at the Indian Jewellery fair. He gave Sergey and OctoNus a huge rap, and also explained the problems they are having cracking ‘scintillation'. Sergey has achieved that, and we think Peter will be very happy when he learns the detail and beauty of his solution.

Below and to the right of Peter is Sergey Sivovolenko, CEO of OctoNus and Dr. Yuri Shelementiev , Head of the Russian Gemmological Center and Moscow State University dept. of Mineralogy.

The group dinner photo from the left is Uptal Mistry, CEO of Lexus, a diamond manufacturing tools company and agents for OctoNus in India, me, Janak, the founder of Lexus, Sergey, Kishor Virani who is the K in K.A.R.P, a large diamond manufacturer in Surat and Yuri.

Sergey and I made a presentation reviewing GIA and AGS cut grade approaches and outlining the need for a new approach to account for human perception, pupil and light source size that uses a concept called ETAS. Unfortunately Peters minders took him and Janak to Surat that day and so they could not attend. The next day Yuri made a presentation on his rough diamond course which is based around a significant collection of 1-1.5ct rough stones. The idea is that everyone needs a good coach to identify systemic weaknesses that can not be discovered by others working in the same environment. The course features some of OctoNus's revolutionary technology including 3D movies viewed with special hi-tech spectacles.

Here we see Uptal doing some coaching in a factory that has just installed Helium Rough.
Most planning departments employ older experienced operators to check the results from the cyber café kids on the computers. Yuri's course aims to condense the experience of these wise old guys into the young operators who are often fresh engineering graduates.
Here a sawn stone is seen through the scanner being prepared for bruting. Note the 2 small black lines that define the material area that the bruter must grind to. Then two stones are being bruted, one on the other in an auto-bruter. The next shot shows a stone being aligned or ‘centered' ready to be bruted.
